I build courses that treat compulsory recreational education like it matters — because it does.
Boat Ed+
Boat Ed+ is a simulation-based boating education course — not a slide deck with a quiz at the end.
The course includes over 75 interactive learning activities, and 33 of the 37 formally mapped to Bloom's Taxonomy operate at Level 3 (Apply) or Level 4 (Analyze). That means students aren't memorizing rules and regurgitating them. They're anchoring in a realistic scenario, reading a buoy, choosing an action in a right-of-way conflict, dragging an anchor rode to the correct length based on depth and conditions — then explaining why.
A virtual instructor accompanies learners throughout — modeled after a Socratic mentor rather than a narrator. The VI poses questions, offers feedback, and guides reflection. Instead of "Here is the rule," it's "Why do you think that light signal matters here?"
Students progress from Cadet Boater to Certified Boater through achievement-based milestones tied to performance and skill mastery, not just completion. The course was refined through over 37 hours of recorded student testing, runs natively on iOS and Android, and includes advanced data hooks that enable state-by-state analysis of learner performance across every lesson, quiz, and activity.
I created the instructional design, the activity mechanics, the content architecture, and the virtual instructor's voice. Boat Ed+ is the work I'm most proud of at Kalkomey — and the proof that mandatory education doesn't have to feel mandatory.
Hunter Ed+ in development
Hunter Ed+ is a ground-up redesign of how America teaches hunter safety — built on the same decision-based learning philosophy as Boat Ed+, but taken further.
Every lesson in the existing course was evaluated and rebuilt. Where the old course asks "what is this?", Hunter Ed+ asks "what is this, and why does it matter?" Where the old course presents the Four Rules of Firearm Safety as a list, Hunter Ed+ introduces them with a personal commitment moment and then puts learners through eight scenarios requiring them to judge safe vs. unsafe and select the reasoning behind their judgment.
The course covers 58 IHEA standards across six trails and three spurs — from the basics of firearm operation through marksmanship, field safety, wilderness preparedness, wildlife law, and the ethics of fair chase. A Trail Tracker practical caps the course: an immersive trailing-and-recovery experience where the student tracks a wounded deer across terrain, reading blood sign, tracks, and behavioral clues while a clock runs. Wrong reads cost time — which is the ethical point.
Hunter Ed+ is currently in development with a target of becoming the new national standard in hunter education.
ilearntohunt.com

The world's first interactive hunter education course. In the gamified curriculum, students earn badges, unlock levels, and watch their power meter increase as they master critical safety topics. Approved by the International Hunter Education Association, the course blends text, animation, video, and interactive virtual manipulatives tailored to a wide range of learning styles.
I created the concept, the curriculum design, and the interactive mechanics. The course shipped in May 2021.

Mystery of Kalkomey Isle

An interactive fiction boating safety course — a branching narrative where students learn navigation rules, right-of-way, and emergency procedures by making choices inside a story. Built with Ink (the scripting language behind 80 Days and Heaven's Vault) and delivered through Unity, it takes the "learn by doing" principle and wraps it in a narrative that students actually want to finish.
JonTron roasted it in a YouTube video with 11 million views. We took it as a compliment.
